About

Two coaches, and neither of us started here.

Guiding Light Coaching is a small life coaching practice run by two coaches who came to this work from counselling in treatment settings, working with individuals, groups and families. That background shapes how we work: plainly, one to one, and honest about where coaching stops and other help should start. We coach adults, young adults and families on life, career, relationships and communication.

You work with the same coach every week, you decide what changes, and we make the pattern visible enough to change it. We work in person in Santa Cruz County, at home across the Bay Area, and by video anywhere in California. Sessions are $130, less in a block of four, eight or twelve, and veterans and first responders get 15% off.

We came to coaching from counselling work in treatment settings. That is why we know where coaching stops, and why we will tell you plainly when something needs a clinician rather than a coach.

How we work

Same coach, every week. You decide what changes; we make it visible enough to actually work on. That is the whole method, before it has a name.

The coaches

Ty Roberts

Four and a half years in the Marine Corps, infantry. Before coaching, Ty worked as a counsellor and case manager with veterans and first responders. He has done this work one to one, in groups, and with families. Peer support certified.

Grant Gaspar

Nearly twelve years in this work, with individuals, groups and whole families, including veterans. Grant works with parents and their adolescent and adult children, and with families where more than one person is carrying it.

When you start, you get one of us — and the same one every week.

The name
A lighthouse on the Santa Cruz coast

A lighthouse does not steer the ship.

Guiding Light was founded in Santa Cruz, and the name was never decoration. A lighthouse stands in one place and makes the shape of the coast visible, so the person at the helm can see where they are. It does not take the wheel.

That is the work: you decide, and we make it visible. It is also why the same coach every week matters — a fixed point is only useful because it does not move.

Who this is for

Anyone who wants to make a change, wherever you're starting from — whether you know exactly what you want to work on or only know that something isn't working.

Where we work

In person in Santa Cruz County, at home across the Bay Area, and by video anywhere in California.

What to expect

  • Sessions are one to one, by video, by phone, or in person.
  • 15% off for active military, veterans and first responders.

Questions

General questions first, then a few specific to each kind of coaching.

General

Is this therapy?

No — this is coaching, a working conversation about how you operate, not therapy, couples or marriage counselling, or family therapy, and it does not address a diagnosable condition. If something you bring up needs a clinician, we say so and help you find one.

Can this be done online, or does it have to be in person?

Yes, either. In person in Santa Cruz County, at home across the Bay Area, or by video anywhere in California — the same coach and the same format each week if you prefer.

What does it cost, and is there a discount for veterans?

A single session is $130, or take a block of four ($495), eight ($935) or twelve ($1,325) — the longer the block, the less each session costs, down to $110. Family coaching is $1,800 a month across a three-month term. Veterans and first responders get 15% off everything.

How long does coaching take?

There is no fixed program for individual coaching — whatever brought you in usually took years to form; you decide when you are done, and we will tell you plainly if we think you are done sooner than you think. Family coaching is the exception, and runs as a fixed three-month term.

Life coaching

What does a life coach actually do, session to session?

The same coach works with you every week on something specific — a decision, a pattern, a standard you are holding yourself to — rather than a general check-in. You leave each session with one thing to do before the next.

Career coaching

Is this executive coaching or leadership coaching?

We do not divide it that way. Whether you manage people or not, the work is the same: the specific conversation, decision, or pattern that is costing you at work. If your situation is mostly about leading others, that is most of what we will work on.

I am thinking about changing jobs. Is this career coaching or job coaching?

Either framing works. We help you work out whether a move is right, and if it is, how to make it — the actual conversations, timing, and what you are optimising for. We do not write resumes.

How is this different from talking to a mentor?

A mentor tells you what worked for them. A career coach works with what is actually true for you, one to one, the same person every week, without an interest in the outcome other than yours.

Relationship coaching

Do both people need to come to relationship coaching?

No. This is coaching for you — what you bring to your relationships, whichever one is hardest right now. Most of the work happens with one person.

Can a relationship coach help with dating?

Yes — the same pattern that shows up in a marriage shows up in dating, usually earlier and more visibly. If that is where you are, that is what we work on.

I am going through a breakup. Is this the right time?

Often, yes. It is a good time to look at the pattern honestly, before it finds its way into the next relationship unnoticed.

What if it is a work relationship, not a personal one?

Same work. How you are with a difficult colleague usually runs on the same handful of moves as how you are with family.

Communication skills

Is this public speaking training or communication skills training?

Both, and they are more connected than they look. Public speaking is the same underlying skill — being clear, and reading a room — aimed at more people at once. If a talk or presentation is the immediate thing, we work on that directly.

What does a communication coach actually do?

Works with you, one to one, on the specific place communication is breaking down — a relationship, a meeting, a stage — starting with listening and then moving to being understood.

I am not bad at talking. I am bad at listening. Is that still communication skills?

That is most of the work, for most people. Being understood is the second half; almost everyone needs the first half more.

Can this help with a specific presentation or talk I have coming up?

Yes. We will work the actual talk — structure, delivery, the room you are speaking to — alongside the broader skill.

How is this different from a public speaking course?

A course teaches a room of people the same material. This is one to one, built around your actual situation, and it includes the listening half that most public speaking training skips entirely.

Young adult coaching

Can a parent make the first call?

Yes. Parents often make the first call, and that is fine. From the first conversation, we are clear with everyone about what stays private.

What stays private?

What a young person says in their own session stays there. If a parent is paying or involved in scheduling, that does not change what is shared — only the young person decides what gets passed along, if anything.

What if my adult child does not want to do this?

It works best when they are willing, even reluctantly. If they are not willing at all, family coaching — which starts with the parent — may be a better first step.

How is this different from family coaching?

Family coaching is for a parent and child working together, with sessions for both. Young adult coaching is one to one with the young adult themselves — a parent can make the first call, but the ongoing work is theirs.

Family coaching

My kid will not agree to this.

Most do not, at first. We start with you. What usually changes their mind is not persuasion — it is that the first thing they hear from us is what stays in their hour, and that turns out to be different from what they expected.

Will you report back to me about what they said?

No. What is said in an individual session stays there. What we bring into the room together, we agree on beforehand. That is the difference between coaching and surveillance, and a young person needs to know which one this is.

Why three months?

Because a month is long enough to feel better and not long enough to change anything. Three months is roughly where the second and third conversations about the same pattern happen, which is where the work is.

Our adult child does not live at home. Does this still work?

Yes. A good deal of this work is with adults in their twenties and thirties. The distance changes the logistics, not the pattern.

Is this the same as a life coach for teens?

It overlaps. Your child gets their own hour, like an individual life coaching client would — the difference is the coordination with you and, where useful, with school or a clinician already involved.
